  • Put the Island Strum into a song! Practice each part with the Ukulele Fool. This video breaks down the Mardi Gras song "Iko Iko" into small little pieces so you can practice the challenge of singing while playing the syncopated Island Strum. As a bonus, you will learn a new chord - C7.
Then move on to the Iko Iko Play-a-Long once you have these small pieces movin' and groovin'.

This lesson was very well done. I really liked the way you broke up the song in a digestable way for newbies like me. Thanks.

Hi, I am new here...this is the first time I felt comfortable with the Island Strum. I am 5:12
and looking at "F-F-F (Iko Iko un" [C7 (Day)] What I get from this is: at this 3rd chord strum of F, we start singing and at the last Down strum, I sing DAY (that is my first question)--If that is yes, then do we just "not worry about that fourth Island Strum of the F chord? and jump right into a new round of the Island Chord for C7? meaning is my next move is finishing the island strum for this C7? [I hope this makes sense to you]

Jerry, It didn't quite make sense to me. But here's what I know, some folks get Iko Iko and the Island Strum just fine - makes perfect sense to them, but not to others until they are more experienced. Try this tune instead - ruclips.net/video/qNYnzW_jY0w/видео.html, or this video - ruclips.net/video/qWwCHPrvBtk/видео.html AND bring your question about Iko Iko to the beginner's jam on Saturday, and we can figure this out on Zoom. Thanks for becoming a patron!

You're a great teacher and decomposed the song well into component parts. Only small thing that I'd suggest for next time is perhaps teaching parts in order that they're sung but that's just my preference I'd recommend you to any learner👍🙂

Oh man. I went through part 1 and though I had it but starting this one right after you say "nice and slow" the strum itself seems very fast and I can't keep up. I guess I'll do part 1 again and see if that helps

For many folks the island strum does not come naturally. I have some other videos on the Island strum that may resonate with you as well. Try doing Come Back Liza. Or my strumming workshop on the Island Strum with Wagon Wheel.

@@TheUkuleleFool thanks! I figured out my problem was going from one bar to the next is faster than I knew. It's only a half beat after the up-down-up to start the down of the next time through. I had to count out 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and and also practice it starting in the middle and transition to the next strum up-down-up-down pause down-up pause up-down-up-down etc. Thinking of the half beats between the first two downs as another pause helped. I'll also try the other videos you mentioned.
