The Sleeping Beauty holds a special place in The Royal Ballet’s repertory. It was the ballet with which the Company reopened the Royal Opera House in 1946 after World War II, its first production at its new home in Covent Garden. Margot Fonteyn danced the role of the beautiful Princess Aurora in the first performance, with Robert Helpmann as Prince Florimund. Sixty years later, in 2006, the original 1946 staging was revived by then Director of The Royal Ballet Monica Mason and Christopher Newton, returning Oliver Messel’s wonderful designs and glittering costumes to the stage.
The masterful 19th-century choreography of Marius Petipa is combined with sections created for The Royal Ballet by Frederick Ashton, Anthony Dowell and Christopher Wheeldon. Together they create an enchanting sequence of gems in the ballet repertory - from the iconic Rose Adage, when Aurora meets her four royal suitors, and the lilting Garland Waltz to the Vision Pas de deux, as Florimund sees Aurora for the first time, and the celebratory divertissements and final pas de deux that bring the ballet to its glorious close. Throughout, Pyotr Il’yich Tchaikovsky’s masterful score takes ballet music to a height of passion, sophistication and intensity that arguably has never been surpassed.

I just realised that the number of pirouettes she does at 3:00 after receiving each rose is equal to the number of roses she is holding.
My goodness, I've watched so many interpretations of the Rose Adage and this is the first time I've ever seen a performance so true to what a 16-year-old princess should be feeling on her birthday. You can tell other principal performers are daunted by the adage but Marianela captivates you with her smile and convinces you that she's a teenage Aurora having the night of her life with the 4 princes, and she does it with tremendous ease. Exquisite technique, artistry, presentation and characterisation - I am in awe.
cyberdanceangel yes!!!!
she’s very lovely i do agree but in my own preference myriam ould-braham is the best aurora.
She is brilliant. Gave me tears. But if you want the prototypical Aurora, watch this.

Margot Fonteyn also had that joy.
It is quite obvious she is nearer 40. I prefer Maria Khoreva.
She has such a charming smile and that’s why I love watching her dance! She makes it seem so easy to do all the difficult choreographies with her amazing technique, and we the audience can tell that she’s having fun on stage!! That’s how she draws attention!
Yet, in the end, she had to pin herself to one spot while keep spinning again and again. I wonder what kind of pain she had to endure while doing that.
OBSERVE, THE LUTE BOYS IN THE BACK ROW HAVE BLESSED US WITH THEIR PRESENCE
LUTE BOYS RISE
Lute boys fanclub time
LUTE BOYS GANG RISE UP
LUTE GANG LUTE GANG
LUTE LADS COME TOGETHER!
I love how tecnically accurate she is while still completely embodying Aurora
I only now realized that the Red Queens tart dance in Alice's Adventures in Wonderland was a parody of this :'D
Omg literally my exact thoughts when watching this lol! 😂
Judit Ginzboorg yh they said it was a tribute XD
i only now realized because of your comment!
SAME!
Ikr! I was like, this is so familiar
I'm going to insert my smug 'I've just seen her do this live' brag right here. Literally awe inspiring. She's wonderful.
The best Aurora!
Nela does the most gracious Rose Adagio I've ever seen... She doesn't rush to get her arms to fifth and back like so many do, she doesn't grab the hands of her partners. she does everything calmly and never forgetting to acknowledge them. Her Aurora doesn't come off as a perfect and cold princess like so many Russian ballerinas do, she really looks like a 16-year-old having an amazing time at her birthday. I always have a big smile on my face just from watching her at 2:14, she looks so happy
Beatriz Lins she is beautiful, but I don‘t agree about the „cold“ Russian ballerinas. She and Olesya Novikova are my favourite Auroras 😍
3:22 the way she acts with the flowers... beautiful. the most amazing dancer ever
Am I the only one that loves the part that stars at 2:16? Her arms move like a blossoming rose, and I find it quite sad that other versions other than Royal's don't have it
thats why I love her so much, she interprets the character so accurately and just does them. they are details choreographers dont touch, you have to find and add them into your dance yourself.
Indeed. Dame Margot too was resplendent in this moment !
YES! My word her artistry is unparalleled.
Durante does it too…😍
Iconic choreography of an iconic ballet. Marianela is sparkling as usual.
Yes, it is beautiful, but it also looked quite painful. Getting pin yourself to one spot and spinning, spinning, spinning. Ouch!
She brings life to each every character, is not only the purity of her technique, she radiates joy and enjoyment in evey compass in every step.
Long live to Queen Nela
the energy that she gave me was absolutely perfect.
Marianela's artistry and poise are simply unmatched. She is so convincing as a princess on her most joyful exciting day. You cannot help but smile with her! I am less poised just responding to the goosebumps she gives me than she is dancing incredible and exhausting feats with that smile on her face!
i've never seen a 16 year old's birthday, but that smile and that confidence looks just about right
Its crazy how every time i watch the rose adagio i am worried if the ballarina will do it right but with Marianela i just completly trust her work and am able to actually enjoy the rose adagio instead of being worried.
I’ve never seen a dancer portray both fiery Kriti and sweet Aurora so well! The two characters are so different!
The Rose Adage will always be my favorite and Nuñez does it like no other
WE MUST ADMIRE THE LUTE BOYS
They were inspiration to us all
The lute lads
Forget one of the biggest impacts in this ballet, all I can see now are the lute bois
From someone who's never been remotely interested in ballet, I'm in awe right now.
I took my dearest nephew to the performance on the 9th of Jan 2020, his first time seeing a ballet. I could not have chosen a better cast of Mr Vadim Muntagirov and Miss Marianela Núñez. I have never seen this notoriously difficult adage danced better, and her balances were stunning. We are so privileged to have her at The Royal Ballet. 🌷🌷🌷🌷
What a beautiful lightness Marianela brings to Aurora. She has the technical end down and survived those balances and promenades beautifully. Thank you for sharing!
i cry every time marianela performs and it amazes me how her technique, her charisma and interpretation shows through all at once!! i hope to see her perform live one day
Every roll Nella gest she does it with such a grace and professionalism. Bravo!!!
1:26 is why I love Marianela!! 😍 She finds moments to really capture the true feeling of what is going on! It’s beyond being an actress she actually becomes who she is portraying and you can see it! BRAVO! ❤️🌟
Bravissima!
I get chills watching that!
Her perfection is so profound I am still getting chills from the last minute of her performance.
marianela nunez is such an amazing dancer I loved her in the role of Odette in sawn lake and she's just as elegant and graceful as Aurora
so true, i love so much mariela nuñez aaa
I've been waiting YEARS for the official Marianela version to be on youtube and it was so worth it! Everyone else does the bourrés at 2:17 just aight, but Marianela makes them so interesting and lovely to watch that it actually makes sense that they're on the big music
I have never seen this danced so perfectly and gracefully!!!! And those promenades😍😍😍😭😭😭
i have to see her perform live before she retires. she is just so amazing and i looooove watching her. it makes me want to melt. shes so graceful and charming and there is so much joy in her movement. and dont even get me started on the excellence that is her technique. like wow.
I think she dances the McMillan choreographed roles to perfection, such as Manon. We have been fortunate to see her at Covent Garden, but Cuthbertson, Osipova and many others are a delight to see.
A professional once said that this is the hardest opening number due to how much time you’re on your toes and it’s at the start.
The music speaks through every step, move gesture and look Marianela creates. Every performance is a first performance. She lives the character from deep within her soul and combines technique, skill, understanding, emotional integrity, dedication and honesty. She will always be my ideal of every character she assumes. I feel humbled to watch her and inspired by her performances.
I absolutely ADORE her.
Such an amazing performance! Every time I watch it I get chills and can’t help but smile. Marianela is such a talented dancer and actress. The way she transforms into the parts she dances is so beautiful and rare
As I have watched this ( quite) a few times, I have noticed other beautiful nuances....the acting of all four of the Princes, each creating an individual character in a few moments on stage with their expressions and gestures. And, I think, the truly loving energy of the Corps and Soloists behind her, ( I recognized quite a few, including Beatrix and Mayara. ) I think Nela must be as sweet a person as she appears to be, based on how sweetly her supporting dancers looked at her !
That's Yasmin Naghdi next to Mayara. Naghdi, Magri, Heap and Parish, Hinkis, Stock, Gasparini and O'Sullivan
And isn't Gary Arvis one of the princes?
@@elizzy8754Yes indeed. Some Prince !! 🥰
She is beyond stunning and acts every single minute of it. One of the greatest dancers of our time.
It is such a delight to see Marianela dance.
The most beautiful, gracious and talented dancer I've ever seen....
Marianela has such a beautiful, happy face. She is really enjoying performing. Such a talent.
Marianella is one of the greatest artists of our time. The beauty of her technique, her artistry, is truly impressive. I am grateful we live at the same time and on the same planet!
Marianela's expression is so lovely and beautiful !!
I am blown away by this performance. She is just so graceful and elegant, it's truly stunning. The costuming is also very spectacular. I'm quite impressed!
She is such a good dancer but can we take a minute to appreciate the kids in the background who are an absolute mood
Yes, the lute boys are remarkably steadfast.
I cannot believe how hard this dance is but how effort and easy a good ballerina makes it look! 👀 🤩 wow
marianela is officially my favorite ballerina 💕 her smile is contagious and the grace with which she dances is so beautiful 💕
There may be dancers with equal or even better technique, but I cannot think of anyone who matches her when it comes to charisma, charm and stage presence.
Omg this is such a masterpiece! She nails her technique every single time! Incredible! Love her Pointe and the tutu looks amazing! Love her charming smile the most! Love her dance so much 😍!
Everytime I watch Marianela dance I get this overwhelming feeling of wanting to cry from just how beautiful and passionate her dancing is. I know squat about ballet but every time I see her perform or practice anything I give her my full attention and my intrigue is peaked.
Какая потрясающая балерина, одна улыбка чего стоит! Море красоты и обаяния.
The sheer talent to balance for that long on one toe and still look graceful is beyond me.❤
Marinella is breathtaking and portrayed the character and beautifully. She is artistically the best female performer I’ve seen!
Love her!
We had to do an essay on this particular adagio at my ballet school so I studied it for an hour and a half or something and noticed so many new things, it was fun! And I got a 100!
Congrats!
Congrats girl👏🏻🥲💪🏻
Love love love Marienela! She makes this set piece live like no other dancer-gorgeous phrasing, so connected to other dancers, presence and articulation in every joint, every count-every movement tells the story. Love her work.
I love how she seems like a really good communicator and collaborator on the stage. Some people are technically good but they are so far into themselves that they aren’t really there and talking (non-verbally, of course) to you. You make eye contact but it’s almost like no one’s home because they are so focused on themselves (and to be clear, I am mostly describing myself. I have been guilty of this when I go through the motions of making eye contact but I am not there in my eyes for my partner). But with her, you can tell that before each développe, she looks each partner in the eye. You can really notice with the second and fourth partner - you can see moment they make eye contact and connect. That is so important but I think hard to do - I think it takes a good amount of experience and a naturally open and communicative personality to really interact with other people while dancing. It’s so easy to get into your own zone and block others out. Also that attitude balance - sure, she doesn’t hold on between hand offs as long as I have seen, but it always kind of bugged me to see the ballerina with eyes fixed on her spot on the floor, face frozen into one expression and using every ounce of concentration she has to keep her balance without her partner’s hand. Like, yes, it’s technically impressive but it gets distracting - it’s not a competition and the steps shouldn’t take away from the story. I love how she just sort of breezes through them. You can SEE her communicate with her partners, she’s like “oops I am wobbly” and they are like “don’t stress it”. She just seems so present and in the moment and her love of dance just radiates out of her. And it’s not just because she is super smiley (though her smile is adorable).
I had heard her being discussed and since I hate bandwagoning I sort of avoided watching her (makes no sense logically, I know) but I was so blown away by her queen of the willies that i am now watching everything I can find of hers.
I love her so much she’s so inspiring
My absolute favorite ballet dance!!!!
the costumes are so great. the queen's hat alone is super
I just got emotional by watching this. So beautiful. Nela is just awesome
All I gotta say is yaaass QUeen! From a balletomane all the way over in California! Impeccable, well-acted, and technically breath-taking.
Beautiful interpretation of auroras and the princes were amazing and the people in the background and the corps de ballet absolutely fabulous. bravo 💕
Para mim ela é a melhor bailarina da atualidade. Classe, lirismo, expressividade, tempo musical perfeito.
Completa!
Marianela Nunez is my absolute fav ballerina of all time!! She inspires me so much and she really embodies the character while still having perfect technique
Incredible!! I’ve heard this is one of the most physically challenging performances for ballerinas
This is my favourite ballet!! It's so difficult though 😀😀 Marianela portrays the character so well. Those feet!!!! 😍😍😍
Marianela is always so amazing!!
That moment from 4:47 - 4:50 was remarkable. I could feel her energy, power, and control! Wow.
There something special about Marianela 🥰 her and Fumi are my absolute favs
She is amazing!! And all the other dancers on the stage are so talented as well! Wow this is so good!!!
She makes it looks like standing on pointe is easy! Marvelous!
Absolutely stunning ~ so so strong!
Who in the world would dislike this beautiful performance by Nunez!!! 😱
Marianela's physical, mental & spiritual strength is out of this world
Rose Adagio is the joy of life and Marianela let us to feel it. 🌸🌸🌸🇦🇷🍀😘
She is so Beautiful.
Only other time I’ve been so moved by this piece was Fonteyn! Brava Nunez! A dancer who dances from the inside out ♥️
Just love this, so graceful.
she really captured the excitement of a sixteenth birthday, what a beautiful performance
Nobody will ever be as exquisite as Marianela!!
She makes feel it real. Wonderful dancer, I love her.
I agree, she's really Aurora. wonderful :-)
No defraudas nunca. Elegancia, alegría, técnica y total entrega. Divina!
She is one of the best ever
Watching Marianela stand still en pointe for each of the princes, I will not lie I felt pain in my foot just from watching that.
This is so emotional 😭
She is so beautiful and so gorgeous 😭😭😭
Channelling Fonteyn but with modern high extensions.. and an almost cheeky sparkle all her own! You forget how hard this adagio is when she dances, her artistry makes it look so effortless
Marianela is the epitome of charm and grace as she performs the notoriously difficult Rose Adagio-- great technique. C❤❤🌹 🌹
Absolutely sublime. What’s wonderful about Marianella is that her dancing coveys humanity. You just want to sit down with her and get to know her. What sense is there in being ethereal if it is cold and distant? Marianella is a beautiful artist. ❤️❤️❤️
WOWW!! THANK YOU!!! VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!! MAGNIFICENT!! THANK YOU! BLESSINGS!!
She makes it look so easy!
She expresses both the Disney and Ballet version of Aurora beautiful, kind, and fair, its just too extravagant to witness.
I love how the corps dancers genuinely adore her and are happy to watch her be Aurora!
Wonderful Nela! For me, the best Rose Adagio, are those of the Royal Ballet remind me of the best in this role, Margot Fonteyn!
She is pure magic!
What a bad balancing day looks like if you're Marianela Nuñez :D
(I love Marianela, she's an absolute living legend, her performance here is still outstanding, but if you've seen her in other things you'll know that those attitude balances could go better)
She seems... unwell, i’m not sure...
Penny Wang what do you mean? She looks fine to me.
I think recordings of the Rose Adage are cursed, everyone I’ve watched seems to just have something a little off when it’s being recorded. Even the stars have their occasional wobble, just proves that they’re still human, and able to sell the role so wonderfully!
@@pinkwings8036 it's just because it's so stinking hard but looks like it should be easy!
The second set were MUCH better than first, you could see her body position was straighter/alignment better and she nailed the very last one. Funny but at no point was she anything other than a princess, but you could see the determination to do better as she prepared for the second set.
Such poise and grace what a magnificent presence she has
This is my absolute dream ballet company and I hope to be a principal dancer for the Royal Ballet Company some day, I look up to her so much and her dancing is outstanding. She is like the perfect balance of technique and performance 🩰🩰!!
She is lovely🌹🌹🌹
Absolutely beautiful 💖💖💖
How utterly charming! she looks as though she's having the time of her life.
Robyn Richards she looked more anxious and impatient to me :/
@@random8channel55 I'm curious as to why you'd say that. She looks, to me, as though she's sharing some joke with her suitors and barely suppressing laughter, (all while performing and incredibly difficult adagio with technical perfection and musicality, btw).
Robyn Richards ah you’re right, but to me , as every suitor went by , it appears as if she gets more impatient and more anxious about finding the right one, her smile also looked forced, not suppressing laughter, but suppressing the difficulty.
